PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Community Mobilization Project is a joint initiative between the Alcoholism Council of New York (ACNY) and the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). The Community Mobilization/Technical Assistant Trainer is responsible for facilitating local community engagement in the community mobilization effort in the New York Metropolitan region.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the guidance of OASAS Prevention staff, Community Mobilization Trainer assists local community groups with key components of the community mobilization process including: community organization, needs assessment and strategic planning, and implementation of appropriate community wide prevention programs designed to address alcohol and substance abuse and other related problem behaviors.
  • Trainer is responsible for establishing effective working relationships with local community coalitions and delivering presentations to a wide range of community groups. S/he coordinates efforts with OASAS Prevention staff to ensure effective communication and provides regular progress reports regarding the status of efforts with local communities participating in this initiative.
  • Trainer will attend OASAS supported skills development & training events, and participate in regional and statewide technical assistance Trainer meetings. S/he will be responsible for developing and mastering the core competencies required to become an OASAS qualified trainer in the Community Mobilization (Communities That Care) process including:
  • Demonstration of a thorough understanding of the Social Development strategy; public health approach; data driven logic models and effective prevention strategies
  • Ability to assess readiness for collaborative research based community youth development planning
  • Understanding of community assessment including profile of problem behaviors, risk & protective factors as well as existing resources and deficiencies
  • Thorough understanding of the process of adult learning and training including the Community Mobilization Planning System
  • Development and demonstration of general training skills
  • Conducts community mobilization training in the metropolitan region and other regions as required by OASAS.
  • Timely submission of written training outcomes as well as participation in training, sessions and meetings as determined by OASAS.

When not directly engaged in OASAS community mobilization activities, the incumbent will be responsible for prevention related projects as determined by the Alcoholism Council of New York.

REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent should possess a bachelor's degree and preferably (2) years experience in the prevention field. In addition, the incumbent must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups.
